GAS INSTALLATION CODE AG 601 - 2002

5.2.7    Combustible surfaces - Temperature limitation

An appliance shall be installed such that the surface temperature of any nearby combustible surface will not exceed 50ºC above ambient.
    NOTES:
  1. Type A appliances installed to manufacturer's instructions should satisfy the intent of this requirement.
  2. Care should be taken where a combustible surface is covered by a non-combustible material. EG. covering a combustible surface with stainless steel will not prevent heat transfer and in some circumstances a hazardous situation could arise.

5.12.1.2    Protection of a combustible surface near a cooking appliance

The protection required by Clause 5.12.1.1 shall ensure the surface temperature of the combustible surface does not exceed 50ºC above ambient.

NOTE:
The fixing of 5mm thick ceramic tiles to the surface or attaching fire resistant material to the surface and covering with sheet metal with a minimum thickness of 0.4mm would satisfy this requirement.

PLEASE NOTE
The above extract from the gas installation code.

When a splashback is to be installed with a gas cooktop the regulations stated above must be adhered to.
