5.2.7 Combustible surfaces - Temperature limitation
An appliance shall be installed such that the surface temperature
of any nearby combustible surface will not exceed 50ºC above
ambient.
NOTES:
- Type A appliances installed to manufacturer's instructions
should satisfy the intent of this requirement.
- Care should be taken where a combustible surface is covered
by a non-combustible material. EG. covering a combustible surface
with stainless steel will not prevent heat transfer and in some
circumstances a hazardous situation could arise.
5.12.2 Indoor open grid barbecues installed in residential
premises - Clearances and protection
An indoor open grid barbecue in a residential premises shall be
installed such that -
(a) any vertical combustible surface less than 200mm from the

area are observed:
(i) Vertically to an overhead grease filter 1200mm
(ii) Vertically to a combustible surface 1200mm
(iii) Vertically to a non-combustible surface 600mm
(iv) Horizontally to a vertical combustible surface 200mm
NOTES:
- This clause applies to appliances designed for use without
a cooking vessel where cooking fats can fall onto and flare up
from a heated perforated plate, volcanic rock or similar refractory
material.
- Any combustible surface less than 1200mm but not less than 600mm
from the cooking surface area may be protected in accordance with
Clause 5.12.1.2.
- The 'cooking surface area' is defined as that part of the appliance
where cooking normally takes place and does not include those
parts of the appliance containing control knobs.
PLEASE NOTE:
There are now quite a few imported cookers coming on the market
with open grid barbecues and if regulations are not followed the
results can be disastrous.
